Council of Europe Monaco participates in the 129th Session of the Committee of Ministers

Gilles Tonelli, Government Counselor-Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, accompanied by Mr. Rémi Mortier, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Monaco to the Council of Europe, participated in the 129th Session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

This meeting took place on May 16-17 in Helsinki, brought together the Foreign Ministers of the 47 member states. It was opened by the President of the Republic of Finland, Mr Sauli Niinistö, on the occasion of a ceremony celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Council of Europe.

At this meeting, the Ministers adopted a Political Decision reaffirming the rights and obligations of each member state of the Council of Europe. They stressed the need for a coordinated mechanism of action with the Parliamentary Assembly in order to be able to react more effectively when a member state does not respect its statutory obligations or the fundamental principles upheld by the Council of Europe. This new mechanism is aimed, in particular, at solving the crisis the organization is going through because of Russia’s nonparticipation in the work of the Parliamentary Assembly.

During his speech, Gilles Tonelli reaffirmed the support of the Principality of Monaco to the Council of Europe and the fundamental values ​​it promotes. He also endorsed the orientations advocated in the Report of the Secretary-General “Meeting the challenges ahead – Strengthening the Council of Europe”, while recalling his commitment to the many achievements of the Organization.
