World Environment Day – June 5, 2019 #CombattreLaPollutiondelAir

Since 1972, June 5 is marked by the World Environment Day initiated by the UN. This 2019 edition focuses on air pollution, a major global problem with more than 7 million deaths a year and 9 out of 10 people breathing polluted air.

This theme invites us to think about how we can change our daily lives and habits to reduce the pollution we produce and breathe! #combattrelapollutiondelair.

At the 1st WHO Global Conference on Air Pollution and Health, held in Geneva from October 30 to November 1 2018, Prince Albert II announced that the Principality was joining the campaign Breathelife, conducted jointly by WHO, UN-Environment and the Coalition for Cleaner Air and Climate (CCAC) to mobilize cities and individuals to protect our health and the planet from the effects of pollution from the air.

On this symbolic day of June 5, the Government-Ministers Councilors Marie-Pierre Gramaglia and Didier Gamerdinger will sign the Principality’s membership of the Breathlife network. The Principality is thus committed to improving air quality, by achieving the goals set by the World Health Organization by 2030.  Notably by promoting the use of clean vehicles, by reducing emissions from buildings, related to heating or air conditioning, limiting the tonnages of incinerated waste and promoting alternative energy sources such as thalassotherapy.

It should be recalled that since 1995, the Principality has been monitoring air quality daily in 5 locations on its territory by stations measuring pollutants such as particulate matter, nitrous oxide, sulfur dioxide, ozone, carbon monoxide and carbon and some metals. Developments are currently underway to evaluate the content of the very fine particles from combustion.

A partnership started since 2015 with AtmoSud, the Association approved for the Air Quality Monitoring in the Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur region, allows the calculation and the provision of a forecast of the air quality.

As part of the Smart City program, Monaco will also install micro-sensors on passenger shelters to assess the quality of the air. Monaco has already taken measures in terms of the elimination of fossil fuels, waste management and support for clean mobility, both reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving the quality of the environment.

Finally, remember that during the World Environment Day, CAM buses will be free!
