Wednesday 31 May was World No Tobacco Day.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

According to the health authorities, there are 15 million smokers in France, including 12 million who smoke daily. And yet tobacco has many consequences on our health. To mark World No Tobacco Day on Wednesday 31 May, the Princess Grace Hospital Centre released a video<\/a> reminding people why it is good to give up smoking.<\/p>\n\n

In it Dr Christophe Perrin, Head of Pneumology at the CHPG, talks about the effects of smoking on our health. And some are better known than others.<\/p>\n\n

“There is, of course, cancer,” he begins. “But it’s not just lung cancer: smoking is responsible for cancers of the throat, mouth, breast, stomach, bladder and uterus… It’s a very, very significant cause of cancer.”<\/p>\n\n

Smoking can also foster diabetes, as well as the onset of cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary heart disease, and respiratory problems, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease “which leads to respiratory failure,” says Dr Perrin.<\/p>\n\n

Finally, smoking can cause aesthetic problems, particularly to do with the skin. “It’s quite the paradox to see tobacco consumption on the increase, particularly among women, while at the same time the whole cosmetic medicine and anti-ageing industry is booming,” says Dr Perrin, who concludes by pointing out that 50% of regular smokers will die of a smoking-related illness.<\/p>\n\n
