For some, this is a moment to reflect on what we have achieved since our life\u2019s rhythm significantly slowed down. Now settled into the new routine, it can also be a time for new challenges. And learning a new language can be one of the most rewarding challenges offered, especially when it is a crucial part of our culture. So\u2026 \u201c\u00fcmparamu u munegascu!\u201d (Let\u2019s learn Mon\u00e9gasque together!)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ald-monaco.org\/\">The Academy of Dialects in Monaco<\/a> has formally promoted the Mon\u00e9gasque language and culture since 1982. Twice a week, the Academy holds classes for experienced speakers and beginners, which are not currently taking place due to the lockdown. However, there remain a few weeks for you to immerse yourself in the Principality\u2019s history and literature, and make good on your new resolution \u2013 to learn Mon\u00e9gasque.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Only 9,300 Mon\u00e9gasques<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Claude Passet, Secretary-General of the Academy of Dialects, wrote the extensive manual on the dialect <em>Bibliography of the Mon\u00e9gasque language (1927-2018)<\/em>. In the introduction, he underlines \u201cthe problem of the lasting-power of the Mon\u00e9gasque language in a principality of nearly 39,000 residents, of which only 9,300 are Mon\u00e9gasque, amongst 130 other nationalities.<\/p>\n<p>According to the writer, \u201cMonaco, despite, and perhaps due to, the hardships of an eventful 800-year long history has managed to preserve a sacred cultural identity on the isolated Rock, crystallised around the Genoese-originating language, which has now become Mon\u00e9gasque.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Louis Notari\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although residents have spoken it for many centuries, the first example of Mon\u00e9gasque literature appeared in 1927 with the publication of <em>A Leganda de Santa Devota<\/em> by Louis Notari. Henceforth, the poet became the father of Mon\u00e9gasque literature and a long battle for the survival of the language began.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21277\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21277\" class=\"size-full wp-image-21277\" src=\"https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Louis-Notari.png\" alt=\"Louis Notari monaco\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Louis-Notari.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Louis-Notari-600x300.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21277\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Louis Notari<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Louis Frolla<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To better support it, academics and speakers first had to codify the language. In 1960, Louis Frolla published <em>Grammaire mon\u00e9gasque<\/em>. Written as \u201can attempt to codify our national idiom whose fall into oblivion we would like to stop\u201d, the Prince\u2019s Government instructed the scholar to print the manual. Three years later Frolla finished the first French-Mon\u00e9gasque dictionary, which would be published some 20 years later by Louis Barral and Suzanne Simone.<\/p>\n<p><strong> Compulsory teaching\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition to these works, Prince Rainier III\u2019s fierce determination to make teaching the language compulsory in all state primary schools from 1976 and private establishments from 1988 contributed to its survival.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In verse rather than prose<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Passet directly quotes <em>Les Fables<\/em> by Louis Principale, inspired by famous French fabulist Jean de La Fontaine, as one of the essential works in the Mon\u00e9gasque. Given that no novels currently exist in the language, the Principality&#8217;s poetry is even more special to its heritage. Louis Notari once said, \u201cWhy did I try to write my Mon\u00e9gasque in verse rather than prose? Quite simply, because the patois of our ancestors seem so harmonious and gentle, that I would have thought I would have diminished its value by doing otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite these efforts and its rich poetic form, the spoken Mon\u00e9gasque language is still likely to die out. Yet its literature is still out there to enjoy. Books by the likes of Louis Notari, Louis Canis and Robert Boisson mean it will never be forgotten or written from the history books.<\/p>\n<p>Some useful Mon\u00e9gasque words<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bon giurnu \/ Bungiurnu \u2013 Hello<\/li>\n<li>A se revede \/ Ciau \u2013 Bye<\/li>\n<li>\u00dcncantau \u2013 Nice to meet you<\/li>\n<li>Per pieij\u00e8 \u2013 Please<\/li>\n<li>Unde \u00e9 a b\u00fcveta? \u2013 Where&#8217;s the bar?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"title-large padding-bottomx2 blocx3\"><strong>&#8220;Daghe Munegu&#8221;?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With every AS Monaco match, the two words flood the social networks. The message &#8220;Daghe Munegu&#8221; may seem mysterious, but it is the best way to encourage Robert Moreno&#8217;s players.
