Two organisations and an Earth System scientist have been rewarded by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation for their work with water management and sustainable agricultural as well as their contributions to sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The winners of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation prize were announced on June 11th. “In this challenging economic environment, supporting science, research and innovative solutions to environmental issues is of paramount importance”, said Olivier Wenden, Vice-President of the Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), based in Colombo, Sri Lanka, won the Water Prize for its development of scientific solutions in support of some of the world’s poorest populations. IWMI helps water users adapt to the effects of global warming. It also provides innovative solutions for smallhold farmers to increase their productivity while managing water wisely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Biodiversity Award went to Deccan Development Society (DDS). This organisation works with the most isolated, the poorest and the most socio-politically disadvantaged women from the margins of society through agricultural activities in the semi-arid region of Zaheerabad in South India. The goal is to establish agricultural systems based on biodiversity but also to create local forests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Finally, Professor Johan Rockstr\u00f6m was awarded the Climate Change Prize. Professor of Earth System Sciences at the University of Potsdam and Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Change Effects, he specialises in the subject of global sustainable development. As a member of an expert group on the European Commission, he also acts as an advisor on subjects relating to sustainable development and adaptation to climate change. He participates in major international meetings such as the World Economic Forum and the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
