The Sovereign extended his condolences to the Portuguese people following the accident that claimed the lives of at least fifteen individuals.<\/strong><\/p><\/p>\n\n

In an official dispatch addressed to Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Prince Albert II expressed the Principality\u2019s sorrow on Wednesday over the Gl\u00f3ria funicular tragedy that occurred Tuesday evening in Lisbon.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cPrincess Charlene and I learned with deep emotion of the tragic Gl\u00f3ria funicular accident in Lisbon,\u201d<\/em> the Sovereign wrote in his message of condolence. \u201cMy family and the people of Monaco join me in expressing our profound grief over this tragedy. We offer our condolences to the bereaved families and our wishes for recovery to the injured. Our thoughts are with the Portuguese people on this day of national mourning.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n

The accident, which took place Tuesday around 6 pm, resulted in the deaths of at least fifteen people when a car of the historic, century-old funicular derailed and violently struck a building. Around twenty others were injured, several seriously, including children and foreign nationals.<\/p>\n\n
