After fifteen months of disruption, the legendary Nice\u2013Tende line will reopen on 15 December, once again offering spectacular panoramas between the Mediterranean and the Alps.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The Roya Valley<\/a> is preparing to breathe again. On 15 December, the Train des Merveilles (Train of Wonders) will resume between Nice and Tende, bringing an end to a long period of no service<\/a>. An official inauguration is scheduled in Breil-sur-Roya in the presence of Jean Castex, head of SNCF, regional president Renaud Muselier and Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot. The ceremony will take place at 11:30 am at Breil station, marking the completion of a colossal \u20ac74 million project.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cA new boost for the train and for the Roya Valley\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

\u201cA true lifeline, the Train des Merveilles was in need of a major modernisation project<\/em>,\u201d says Renaud Muselier. \u201cToday, with secure infrastructure, refurbished trains and an enhanced service, it\u2019s a new boost for the train and for the Roya Valley<\/em>,\u201d read the posters at stations announcing the train\u2019s return. Launched in September 2024<\/a>, the works made it possible to secure two tunnels, including the legendary Braus tunnel, protect twelve structures from rockfalls, and replace a rail bridge as well as several sections of track. The R\u00e9gion Sud (Provence-Alpes-C\u00f4te d’Azur) funded more than 70% of the project.<\/p>\n

A redesigned service<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

While the train\u2019s return is a breath of fresh air for local residents, the service remains modest: two round trips a day on weekdays between Nice and Tende, and three at weekends and on public holidays. Departures from Nice will take place at 9:32 am, 1:32 pm and 4:38 pm, while Tende\u2019s trains will leave at 12:59 pm and 4:38 pm. Between Nice and Breil, the frequency will be higher, with one train every hour during peak times.<\/p>\n\n

The 70-kilometre route through the Paillon, B\u00e9v\u00e9ra and Roya valleys, punctuated by helical tunnels and dizzying viaducts, can finally maintain its place among the most beautiful railway lines in Europe.<\/p>\n\n
