He does admit however that in June \u201cwe would have begged for a July and August like the ones we\u2019ve just had\u201d. In other terms, even if feelings are mixed, one would rather see the glass half-full than half-empty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guy Antognelli thinks it is difficult to give a verdict on the month of June, which he describes as \u201cnot representative\u201d of the overall situation. \u201cSome hotels stayed open for residents and the others re-opened between June 4<sup>th<\/sup> and 28<sup>th\u201d<\/sup>, he explains. Business tourism, which is usually in full swing during the month, was simply nowhere to be seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New, more local visitors <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In July, the number of hotel clients halved with varying degree depending on the hotel. There were overall fewer clients, but all of them were still willing to pay the hefty price of a Monaco stay. \u201cWe saw a small price drop of around 13%. This is mainly due to the absence of Russian, American and Middle East visitors who usually book the bigger suites,\u201d explains Monaco\u2019s chief, noting: \u201cbut the price of a stay for French visitors in July is more or less the same as last year\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In light of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/en\/2020\/08\/monaco-and-france-added-to-uk-quarantine-list\/\">various travel bans still in place<\/a>, it was Western European visitors that took the centre stage this summer. France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland\u2026 These are the main countries targeted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/en\/2020\/07\/monaco-sends-reassuring-message-to-tourists-visiting-this-summer\/\">this summer\u2019s marketing campaign<\/a> released by Monaco\u2019s Tourism and Convention Authority. \u201cNowadays, these are the clients who have the biggest impact onMonaco\u2019s economy, simply because they are the only ones there,\u201d remarks Guy Antognelli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">August witnesses a rise in tourist number <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Things are looking up in August. One need only look at the Casino square and the Palace square to notice the rising tourist numbers. On August 13<sup>th<\/sup>, hotels were 80% booked for the coming week. Data predicts a drop of 35% to 40% on last year\u2019s numbers. \u201cIt tells us that Monaco remains an attractive destination, the bustle of tourists is starting again. It will make cash to flow back into businesses, something which hasn\u2019t happen in a while,\u201d says Antognelli. Is an increase in visitor numbers enough to sustain the entire tourisms industry? \u201cNo,\u201d answers Antognelli categorically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The health and economic crisis resulting from Covid-19 has lasted for now five months, severely impacting the revenue of all those involved in the tourism sector. Even the businesses who were relatively stable before the pandemic now face difficulties. Amongst the most affected are event agencies, who have not had any business since March. \u201cThere was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/en\/2020\/05\/f1-monaco-plans-to-hold-three-motor-races-in-2021\/\">no Grand Prix<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/en\/2020\/06\/monaco-yacht-show-postponed-to-september-2021\/\">the Yacht Show was cancelled<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/en\/2020\/05\/weddings-in-2020-for-better-or-for-worse\/\">we still have weddings<\/a>, but they are all on the smaller scale. It is this sector of the tourism industry which had been the most affected. Most of them are little businesses with a small treasury,\u201d explains Guy Antognelli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WFi1XNzOt74&#038;t=181s\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Business tourism facing an uncertain future<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What about business tourism? At the moment, Monaco\u2019s Tourism and Convention Authority would rather not get carried away: \u201cConventions can be postponed, but these are events for which it is difficult to make plans.\u201d The problem is how can one prepare an event that will take place in several months without knowing what the health measures will be? There is also the question of how to get visitors to come. \u201cToday, the uncertainty is such that partner businesses and participants cannot confirm whether they are coming or not. And when it comes to this, neither we nor the organisers can do much more than tell them \u2018here, this is everything we\u2019ve done to ensure your safety during this event\u2019\u201d, states Guy Antognelli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if Monaco\u2019s tourism industry is picking itself up, the uncertainty of the future months remains at the back of everyone\u2019s mind. Nobody knows what autumn will look like. Meanwhile, to cope with this unprecedented crisis, the Princely government is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/en\/2020\/07\/monaco-presents-its-economic-recovery-plan\/\">providing
