In honour of European mobility week, discover the Canadian-produced electric bike which is shaking up the Principality\u2019s transport service.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">MonaBike, the bike that won\u2019t make you break a sweat!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In July 2019, 300 electric bikes the colour of Monaco\u2019s flag arrived in the principality. Produced in the town of Longueuil, in the Canadian province of Qu\u00e9bec, the bikes are scattered in 35 locations throughout the principality. The company which produces the bikes, PBSC Urban Solutions, has launched a similar system in the United Sates, in Australia, in France, and more recently in Argentina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mercedes of bike-sharing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So how does it all work? Well, an app lets you see how many bikes are available, and where. Once the bike is parked back into one of the solar-powered smart stations, the battery, which can last up to 60 km, recharges automatically. \u201cMonaBike is the Mercedes of bike-sharing,\u201d says Luc Sabbatini, CEO of PBSC Urban Solutions. The electric bikes can reach up to 25 km per hour and have a ten-year warranty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A collaboration between Monaco\u2019s bus company and MonaBike<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cam.mc\/en\">Compagnie Autobus Monaco<\/a> (CAM) &#8211; Monaco\u2019s bus company &#8211; is known for its dedication to the environment.\u00a0 By 2030, the company aims to run on fully electric or hydrogen-powered buses. Through its collaboration with MonaBike, CAM can expand its offer of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/en\/2020\/06\/getting-around-monaco-sustainably-welcome-the-new-monabike\/\">sustainable mobility<\/a>, all while helping Monaco in its energy transition.\u00a0 \u201cMonaBike encourages <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/en\/2020\/07\/marie-pierre-gramaglia-we-are-working-on-a-line-between-nice-and-cap-dail\/\">soft modes of transports<\/a>, which is exactly our aim,\u201d says the CAM\u2019s Chief Operating Officer, Roland de Rechniewski. It is also thanks to MonaBike that Monaco introduced a 1,7 km long cycling path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Young people in cities don\u2019t want to buy, they prefer to rent<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Between 1,200 and 1,600 users a day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Monaco, the bikes are used on average 1,200 times a day, a number which can go up to 1,600. \u201cBike Sharing is just a little part of public transport services, but for a city it\u2019s a jackpot. You can get 1,000 quality bikes for the price of a single bus. It\u2019s in demand. Studies predict an annual market growth of 10%\u201d, explains Luc Sabbatini, CEO of PBSC Urban Solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also advantageous from a point of view of time and expenses. \u201cThere\u2019s no need to get the bike out of the garage, or to find a post on which to lock it. Young people in cities don\u2019t want to buy, they prefer to rent,\u201d says Mr. Sabbatini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MonaBike is just starting in off in Monaco. PBSC Urban Solutions aims to expand in the towns around the Principality. \u201cThere are three bike stations in Beausoleil (a French town adjacent to Monaco). But that\u2019s just the start \u2013 if the system works well, we will set up new stations in other nearby towns,\u201d explains CAM\u2019s Thierry Francart, who is in charge of MonaBike. By the end of the year, the Principality will welcome 11 new bus stations and 100 extra bikes.
