The&nbsp;study\u2019s&nbsp;results are concerning. Scientists found an average of 1.26 microplastic pieces per gram of sediment. They estimate the total weight of deep-sea <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/en\/2020\/10\/new-mutant-enzyme-could-solve-the-planets-plastic-pollution-problem\/\">plastic pollution<\/a> to be about 14 million tons, a number 30 times higher than expected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cThe deep ocean is a sink for microplastics\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Microplastic refer to any kind of plastic waste which is smaller than 0.5 cm. Sun, sand, and wave action all help degrade the 19 to 23 million tons of plastic items that find their way into our oceans and rivers every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, we know very little about the extent of microplastic deep <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/en\/2020\/03\/bemed-2020-award-winners-for-a-plastic-free-mediterranean-sea\/\">ocean pollution<\/a>. &#8220;Our research found that the deep ocean is a sink for microplastic,&#8221; says Dr. Denise Hardesty, the study&#8217;s co-author. &#8220;By identifying where and how much microplastic there is, we get a better picture of the extent of the problem,&#8221; she explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tackling the problem isn&#8217;t simply a matter of recycling better our waste. The issue is more pervasive than that. An action as common as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/en\/2020\/09\/how-washing-your-clothes-harms-the-environment-and-your-health\/\">washing your clothes can release concerning amounts of microplastic in the environment<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through his Foundation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/en\/2020\/09\/world-cleanup-day-prince-albert-takes-part-in-monaco-clean-up-effort\/\">Prince Albert II of Monaco continues to fight actively against plastic pollution<\/a>.
