For the last episode of our series on the Riviera\u2019s luxury hotels, discover the Grand-H\u00f4tel du Cap,\u00a0an alabaster palace that sits proudly at the utmost point of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. <\/strong><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p><p>\u201cIt is simply impossible to talk about the Grand-Hotel without mentioning the history of the village of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat first,\u201d says Fran\u00e7ois-R\u00e9gis Simon, the hotel&#8217;s General Manager since April 2015.\u00a0 At the end of the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is but a hamlet of the nearby village of Villefranche-Sur-Mer, where farmers and fishermen live in modest houses around the church and the port. But at the end of the century, King Leopold II of Belgium builds a villa on Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat. And the hamlet is no longer a hamlet. Two hotels are built in order to accommodate the king&#8217;s friends, including the Grand-H\u00f4tel du Cap in 1908.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"886\" height=\"585\" src=\"https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/facade-grand-hotel-du-cap-f-errat-early-20th-century.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41844\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/facade-grand-hotel-du-cap-f-errat-early-20th-century.jpg 886w, https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/facade-grand-hotel-du-cap-f-errat-early-20th-century-454x300.jpg 454w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 886px) 100vw, 886px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n<p><p>For the last century, the Grand-H\u00f4tel du Cap has watched history unfold. In 1914, the hotel is converted into a war hospital and in the early 30s, it becomes a film set for the 1933 version of Don Quichotte. And with celebrity come celebrities: as the summer season on the C\u00f4te d\u2019Azur becomes fashionable, the hotel welcomes the <em>beau monde<\/em>, from Winston Churchill to Elizabeth Taylor.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-la-d-coration-sign-e-pierre-yves-rochon\">A historic swimming pool<\/h2>\n\n<p><p>In 1937, the rat race for the title of the most prestigious hotel on the Riviera is tight. Two contesters, the Grand-H\u00f4tel du Cap and the Cap Eden Roc defy each other by way of\u2026 swimming pools. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/en\/2020\/09\/luxury-hotels-of-the-french-riviera-hotel-du-cap-eden-roc-home-to-royalty-writers-and-artists\/\">If the Cap Eden Roc builds the Riviera&#8217;s first swimming pool,<\/a> the Grand-Hotel soon meets the challenge by building a 33,33m long pool, the Olympic standard at the time.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p><p>In the 50s, the Grand-Hotel turns America\u2019s eye and its wealthiest families, and to this day guests from over the pond are rife at the hotel. \u00a0For Francois-R\u00e9gis Simon the establishment&#8217;s interior design, conceived by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pyr-design.com\/fr\/\">Pierre-Yves Rochon<\/a>, has a lot to do with the hotel&#8217;s appeal. \u201cWe owe Rochon the minimalist hues of the Grand-Hotel, a mix of the white of light, the blue of the sea and of the sky, and the green of nature,\u201d he says.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-gastronomie-et-mieux-tre\">From wellness to patisseries <\/h2>\n\n<p><p>At the heart of the hotel\u2019s ethos is the pledge to offer guests a moment of respite from the frenzy of everyday life. \u201cOur spa has six treatment rooms, including one which offers aromatherapy. The aromatic plants used for treatments are grown in our gardens. We have to ensure that our guests can rest and that a weekend at Cap-Ferrat is an occasion to recharge one\u2019s batteries,\u201d explains the hotel manager.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p><p>A lot of things are in the works at the Grand-H\u00f4tel du Cap. \u201cWe\u2019re working with dieticians and osteopaths to organise wellness retreats.\u201d\u00a0 The headquarters of the hotel\u2019s swimming club, inaugurated in 1939, are also being renovated and will be transformed into two villas. \u00a0And as for the sweeter things in life, head <em>patissier<\/em> at the Grand-H\u00f4tel, Florian Margaillan has marketed his very own Christmas line. A range of gourmet products by the name of <em>D\u00e9lices du Cap<\/em>, including a yule log cake, will be launched in November.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Locals call it the &#8220;Great White Lady&#8221;.
