However, climate change threatens it.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/en\/2020\/09\/prince-albert-of-monaco-co-founds-global-fund-to-protect-coral-reefs\/\">Reef-building corals<\/a> have the peculiarity of living symbiotically with little photosynthetic algae which are found in the coral\u2019s very cells. These algae are corals primary food supplier, which get 80 to 90 % of their nutrients from the algae\u2019 photosynthetic process.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sans-algues-les-coraux-plus-expos-s-au-stress\">Without algae, corals have higher stress levels<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>In the case of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/en\/2020\/09\/marine-heatwaves-a-death-sentence-for-corals-in-the-mediterranean\/\">marine heatwaves<\/a>, corals undergo a process called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/pages\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-coral-bleaching-and-how-we-can-stop-it\">coral bleaching<\/a>. \u00a0Coral bleaching occurs when the animal expels algae that live inside its tissues. Without the algae, scientists also note that corals\u2019 stress levels increase. \u00ab\u00a0After the corals expel the algae, they feed themselves almost exclusively by capturing zooplankton and we have proof that the zooplankton also helps sustain the remaining algae\u201d, explains Monaco\u2019s scientific centre.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p>The research looked at the impact of zooplankton on coral bleaching. The results found that &#8221; capturing zooplankton is a key factor in corals\u2019 survival against climate change\u201d. Corals fed with zooplankton are less exposed to coral bleaching, meaning that their photosynthesis is stronger than that of non-fed corals.
