A young ballet dancer is torn between the man she loves and her pursuit to become a prima ballerina.

Julian Craster is an unknown young composer studying at the London Conservatoire. He discovers that his teacher has stolen one of his works and incorporated it into the score of a new ballet – based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale of the same name, which he is conducting at Covent Garden. Julian complains to Boris Lermontov, the impresario of the famous dance company, who plays down the incident and in response offers him a position in the company that leads to a great career.

Victoria Page is an ambitious young ballerina who tries to join the Lermontov Ballet with the help of her aunt Lady Neston, an aristocrat and patron of the arts who organises a party to introduce her niece to the influential Boris Lermontov, who refuses to see her dance.
