AS Monaco won 0-1 against Canet-en-Roussillon thanks to an early goal from Moussa Sylla, which qualifies them for Coupe de France round of 32.

Thierry Henry’s Monaco starts the new year with a victory. The team confronted Canet-en-Roussillon in Coupe de France play last night and came away with the with thanks to a goal from young talent Moussa Sylla in the 2nd minute of play. Even though the Coupe de France is not a priority for Monaco (currently 19th on the Ligue 1 table), the result is a positive outcome for a relatively young group.

Impressions from the field

Everyone expected a relatively balanced match to play out on the rugby league field of the Catalan Dragons of Perpignan, but the early score of Sylla (2nd minute) put the Monegasques in quick control. They were soon after helped by the early expulsion of Lopy (18th). Jemerson’s hand in the box had not been whistled a few minutes before, but the unfavorable circumstances did not discourage the Canetois, who remained in the match until the very end, even if they did not generate many threats in front of Rouge et Blanc keeper Badiashile.

The ASM goalkeeper only had to relax to capture a header from Vie (60) and an off-center free-kick by Mansuy (90 + 1). In spite of the match being generally laborious, the Monegasques will take away a promising first performance from new recruit Naldo as well as the return of Rony Lopes. The attacking midfielder took to the field in the 66th minute for the first time since September 2nd. Robert Navarro also came back to play for the first time in a few months.

AS Monaco will return to action this Wednesday against Rennes for a trip to the semifinal of the Coupe de la Ligue.
