Ligue 1: AS Monaco’s winning streak in the league reaches five after Brest victory
The Red and Whites dominated Stade Brestois at the Stade Louis-II to reign supreme and extend their unbeaten streak to eight in the league.
On the birthday of Prince Albert II, AS Monaco delivered a fitting gift to the Principality and their supporters. Mission accomplished. Against a Brest side in good form, the Monegasques showed both solidity and efficiency. Under the watchful eyes of president Dmitry Rybolovlev as well, Folarin Balogun beat Grégoire Coudert early in the game before Aleksandr Golovin sealed the victory in the final quarter of an hour (2-0). Sébastien Pocognoli’s outfit have now won five consecutive league matches, confirming their excellent run of results.
Balogun shines again
After a balanced start where Brest created a few chances, notably through Romain Del Castillo (11′) and Ludovic Ajorque (12′), it was Monaco who struck first.
Joris Chotard saw his attempt to restart intercepted by Lamine Camara, and the ball came back to the feet of Balogun, who found the corner expertly (1-0, 19′). It was the American’s fourth straight goal in the league and his eighth of the season in Ligue 1.

Monaco then multiplied their attacking moves: Aladji Bamba pinpointed Maghnes Akliouche, who failed to make the most of the chance (26′), Camara sent his half-volley over the bar (29′) and Golovin was denied by a fine save from Coudert from a free kick (35′).
For their part, Brest almost took advantage of a mistake by Lukáš Hradecký (25′), back in the ASM goal after many weeks of absence. They were even close to equalising, but neither Junior Dina Ebimbe nor Ajorque could take Brendan Chardonnet’s fleeing cross (31′). The Pirates headed to the locker room determined to fight back.

Golovin celebrates his 200th appearance in style
At the start of the second half, Brest, the second-best team in Ligue 1 over the last six games (behind ASM), returned with new intentions. But the Monegasque defence, led by Denis Zakaria and Wout Faes, did not tremble.
Golovin continued to be impactful: the Russian curled a strike from the edge of the box and forced Coudert into a quality stop (51′). Balogun came very close to securing a double, but his attempt hit the outside netting, to the great despair of the Premieres stand, who thought they saw the ball in the back of the net (68′).

The match was definitively sealed in the 78th minute. From a good delivery by Biereth, who had just come on as a substitute, Mamadou Coulibaly missed his shot, but Golovin followed up perfectly and placed his effort under Coudert’s bar (2-0, 78′). The Monegasque number 10, who had already scored last week at the Parc des Princes, celebrated his 200th Ligue 1 appearance tonight, all in the colours of AS Monaco, in superb style.

Heading for Europe
Solid until the final whistle, the Monegasques contained the Brest attack very well, limiting them to just one shot on target in the 82nd minute. They have now recorded a third clean sheet in four home games and provisionally move to fifth place in Ligue 1, just three points from the top four.

Pocognoli: “We’ve come a long way”
In the post-match press conference, Pocognoli was satisfied but careful to keep his feet on the ground. The coach reflected on this triumph, which he considers particularly instructive, stating: “This kind of 2-0 victory, having been solid defensively, solid in the state of mind and being clinical when it was needed, gives me a lot of satisfaction.”
On his team’s defensive strength vs Brest, a side renowned for their physical impact and ability to win second balls, Pocognoli acknowledged the difficulty of the task. “Brest gave us a hard time with our animation with the ball. In their style, they are perhaps the best in France,” he explained.
The Belgian manager was also keen to highlight the decisive role of the substitutes during the game, insisting: “The last ten minutes with the pistons who were replaced brought this last solidity, which allowed us to cut off hope on the last attacks. It was a great team effort.”
Asked about the club’s growing European ambitions, Pocognoli remained measured. “We’ve come a long way. We cannot pretend to say that we should aim for this or that place. But if we continue, we can be ambitious about what is in front of us,” said the 38-year-old.
High stakes
After some complicated weeks, the Monegasque machine is now running at full speed. Two crucial matches now await Pocognoli’s men in the race for Europe: a trip to Olympique Lyonnais next weekend, then the reception of Olympique de Marseille on April 5. Two confrontations that will allow ASM to determine how far they can continue their remarkable climb up the table.
