The president of the Prince Pierre Foundation travelled to the Mexican capital to inaugurate an exhibition of several monumental sculptures by Simone Fattal.

Princess Caroline travelled to Mexico City on 3 February to unveil the creations of French-Lebanese artist Simone Fattal, winner of the 49th International Contemporary Art Prize. The exhibition is the result of a partnership between the Monegasque Foundation and the Jumex Museum, a major institution for contemporary Mexican art. Two bronze sculptures, Adam and Eve, dated 2021, and Door, created in 2024, have been installed on the museum’s esplanade. They will remain on display until 1 March. A third piece completes the collection presented to the public.

The work of Simone Fattal in the spotlight

The Franco-Lebanese artist has developed a multidisciplinary practice that spans sculpture, painting, collage and writing. Her work is inspired by ancient mythologies, archaic forms and contemporary questions about memory and identity. The exhibition marks the first presentation in Mexico of the works of this artist, who was born in Damascus in 1942.

A prestigious triennial prize

The International Prize for Contemporary Art has existed since 1965 and is awarded every three years to an artist for their entire career. The jury is chaired by Princess Caroline and composed of an artistic committee that selects international sponsors responsible for proposing candidates. The work that earned Simone Fattal the prize is entitled Sempre il mare, uomo libero, amerai! and dates from 2023. Her nomination was put forward by Christine Tohme, a Lebanese curator and director of Ashkal Alwan. Since 2013, each winning work has been presented internationally. Mexico City was chosen for this edition, strengthening the cultural ties between Mexico and Monaco during the capital’s contemporary art week.
