Train des Merveilles between Nice and Tende resumes service via Roya Valley
After fifteen months of disruption, the legendary Nice–Tende line will reopen on 15 December, once again offering spectacular panoramas between the Mediterranean and the Alps.
The Roya Valley is preparing to breathe again. On 15 December, the Train des Merveilles (Train of Wonders) will resume between Nice and Tende, bringing an end to a long period of no service. An official inauguration is scheduled in Breil-sur-Roya in the presence of Jean Castex, head of SNCF, regional president Renaud Muselier and Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot. The ceremony will take place at 11:30 am at Breil station, marking the completion of a colossal €74 million project.
“A new boost for the train and for the Roya Valley”
“A true lifeline, the Train des Merveilles was in need of a major modernisation project,” says Renaud Muselier. “Today, with secure infrastructure, refurbished trains and an enhanced service, it’s a new boost for the train and for the Roya Valley,” read the posters at stations announcing the train’s return. Launched in September 2024, the works made it possible to secure two tunnels, including the legendary Braus tunnel, protect twelve structures from rockfalls, and replace a rail bridge as well as several sections of track. The Région Sud (Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur) funded more than 70% of the project.

A redesigned service
While the train’s return is a breath of fresh air for local residents, the service remains modest: two round trips a day on weekdays between Nice and Tende, and three at weekends and on public holidays. Departures from Nice will take place at 9:32 am, 1:32 pm and 4:38 pm, while Tende’s trains will leave at 12:59 pm and 4:38 pm. Between Nice and Breil, the frequency will be higher, with one train every hour during peak times.
The 70-kilometre route through the Paillon, Bévéra and Roya valleys, punctuated by helical tunnels and dizzying viaducts, can finally maintain its place among the most beautiful railway lines in Europe.
